One of 13 state universities in Ohio, the University of Toledo was established in 1872. It became a member of the state university system in 1967. The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio recently merged to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state. Built around eleven academic colleges and professional programs, UT’s main campus is located along the banks of the Ottawa River in a residential section of the city and includes historic buildings, contemporary residence halls and plenty of green space. The University of Toledo Health Science Campus is home to UT Medical Center hospitals and clinics and many of UT’s health-science research and education programs. Adrian College. Adrian College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college of about 1000 students. Related to the United Methodist Church, it is a traditional four-year, residential college that focuses completely on undergraduate education. University of Toledo Athletics. Athletics are a big part of the University of Toledo for both men and women. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf and tennis. As for women, they compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In addition, there is a dynamic coed cheerleading squad. Lourdes College. Lourdes College is a coeducational, liberal arts college sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Sylvania, Ohio. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Council on Social Work Education. In addition to the educational facilities, Lourdes College also provides services through The Franciscan Center, a performing arts and conference facility. Owens Community College History. Owens Community College began as a technical institute under the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Education. The first classes were offered in Toledo on September 13, 1965 with less than 200 students. Two years later, the College was chartered by the Ohio Board of Regents as a technical college. In 1983, the school opened its Findlay-area campus. Since 1994, Owens has more than doubled its student enrollment and is the fastest growing higher educational institution in Northwest Ohio.
